Road Safety
Fireseeds North has been providing innovative road safety engineering solutions worldwide since 2014. Our road safety work has focused on road safety audits, new technology development, training, and R&D. We formed MicroTraffic, which invented kinetic energy based video conflict analysis and scaled it to 100 cities before the technology was acquired by Miovision, whom we continue to support. We focus on the following projects:
Road Safety Audits. As one of Canada’s top road safety audit firms, we conduct design-stage and pre-opening road safety audits globally. We perform road safety audits directly for governments, all major engineering firms, and for P3 consortiums. Learn about our Road Safety Audit Start Program.
In-Service Road Safety Reviews. We review problematic intersections or road segments to diagnose road safety problems and recommend effective countermeasures. We are global leaders in the use of video conflict analysis for detailed and predictive diagnostics. Learn about our video-based ISRSR packages.
Continuous Safety Monitoring Implementation. We help agencies begin to use Miovision’s Continuous Safety Monitoring Tool. This tool provides near-miss data 24-7-365 through permanent camera installations. We assist with planning, pilot site selection, training, data interpretation, and business case planning for post-pilot expansion. Learn more about our Continuous Safety Monitoring Implementation Services.
Road Safety Warrants and Guideline Updates. We help update your documents used for making key decisions about road safety. Your new guideline will be tailored to local conditions while reflecting the latest road safety research and peer best practice. We often integrate new data sources into warrants, such as using near-miss conflict data for left turn or pedestrian warrants.
Road Safety Commercial R&D. We have helped bring several new road safety products to market and performed 3rd party research to validate the quantitative impact of road safety products for marketing purposes. We have worked with Miovision, 3M, Waymo, Bosch, Swarco, and many others in support of commercial road safety objectives.
Road Safety Training. We have provided road safety training for hundreds of engineers all over the world, with courses delivered in North America, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. We have provided courses on the following topics: road safety audits, human factors in road safety, road safety management, road safety network screening, and road safety technology. We recently launched the Global Road Safety Academy where you can take a 4-hour primer course on road safety audits.
Fitness Labs
We have recently started working in the area of fitness, a public health issue that is as critical as road safety. Hundreds of millions of people in this world are living at very low fitness levels, causing extreme levels of early mortality and loss of quality of life. We are tackling this by building and incubating experimental fitness applications focused on the power of teams and the science of habit formation to help people make lasting positive changes. This work is hosted inside Fireseeds North on a short-term basis. To learn more or manage your account visit our fitness labs page.

Craig Milligan is an expert road safety engineer applying a proactive and safe systems approach to vision zero. He is a past chair of the Transportation Association of Canada Road Safety Standing Committee, a road safety audit instructor for the International Road Federation, and a past board member of the Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals.
Milligan has a deep portfolio of road safety engineering experience:
Conducted road safety audits for more than $8B of urban and rural road projects at all stages (conceptual design, preliminary design, detailed design, work zone, and pre-opening) covering complex intersections, freeways, bridges, interchanges, and cycling facilities.
Provided road safety audit training to hundreds of engineers from Canada, the U.S., Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.
Completed in-service road safety reviews of more than 600 intersections and 4000 km of highway in six countries.
Completed updates of 10 road safety technical guidelines and authored more than 40 technical publications in road safety.
Developed more than 300 network screening models and safety performance functions.
Assisted in the design of budget management systems for over $80 billion in transportation assets with a focus on applying ISO-style asset management systems.
Earned a Ph.D. in road safety performance and risk forecasting with the prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, Canada’s top award for Ph.D students.
Pioneered the use of video analytics as a diagnostic technique for widespread use in network screening applications and in-service road safety audits.
Acted as consultant to the World Bank’s lead transport economist on designing a framework to account for road safety in transport lending decisions.
Worked with Waymo, 3M, Bosch, Swarco, Miovision, and others on topics including road safety research, product development, and M&A strategy.
