Road Safety Audit of Winnipeg’s Empress Street Cycle Tracks and Roadworks

Fireseeds North was retained by the City of Winnipeg to provide a road safety audit of the cycling facilities and roadworks in the Empress Street Project preliminary design, as well as an in-service road safety review of the Empress Street and St. Matthews intersection.

CBC News reported on Nov 23, 2017 that the Empress Street project is the largest of eight projects in the 2018 Regional Streets budget. The project includes St. John’s Ambulance Way, the Empress Street Bridge over Portage Avenue, and Empress Street from Portage Avenue to St. Matthews Avenue.  The project will add significant new active transportation facilities, including cycling lanes.

A design-stage road safety audit is a step that occurs before a design is finalized and it involves a review of the design by an independent expert team exclusively focused on road safety; the goal is to help the project team identify opportunities to improve safety.

Fireseeds North, based in Winnipeg, specializes in road safety engineering and provides road safety audits across Canada and internationally.
